Being recognized as a "distinguished" high school in Virginia means Godwin exceeded state expectations under the Virginia Department of Education accountability system, which includes:
Mastery: measures student performance on the Virginia SOL tests
Readiness: measures students' readiness for future enrollment employment, or enlistment after high school (3E Readiness) and the student absenteeism rate
Graduation Rate: measures the percentage of students graduating with an advanced or standard diploma in four years

September 30th to October 15th, Godwin hosted 14 students and their teachers from Homberg, Germany.
German students attended multiple school days with their Godwin host students. They also experienced Senior Convocation, Godwin homecoming week, an overnight trip to Washington D.C., and much more! Godwin students will travel again to Homberg this summer to continue the exchange!
The highlight of the past two weeks was Henrico County hosting world-renowned German artist, Mr. Martin Steinert, who worked with Godwin's AP Art students and teacher, Ms. Bare, to create the wooden cloud sculpture commemorating the 30th anniversary of the exchange between Henrico and Homberg. The wood cloud sculpture, with messages of world peace and unity written by students, teachers, and community members on its wooden slats, symbolizes the sails of a ship, bridging the exchange of the two cities across the Atlantic Ocean. The project culminated with a dedication ceremony on October 13th. Mr. Steinert created a similar sculpture in Homberg during the student exchange in June of 2026, also commemorating the 30th anniversary.
Thank you to Henrico County Manager, Mr. John Vithoulkas and Henrico County Board Representative for the Tuckahoe District, Mr. Jody Rogish, for their support of the exchange and hosting Mr. Steinert in Henrico County.
Thank you to Mr. Ungerleider, Godwin's German teacher, for planning the exchange and for hosting teachers from Homberg, to Ms. Bare, Godwin's AP Art teacher, for planning and organizing the wood sculpture project, and to the Godwin students and families who hosted these German students!
Thank you to Lowe's in Short Pump for their donation of all of the materials used for the sculpture.

National Digital Citizenship Week
|
Last week during Common Study, our Freshman class sponsor, Paige Roemer, and our Freshman Class Officers presented information to the entire school about finding a healthy balance in relation to screen time. They also challenged students to identify one online habit they would like to reduce or change by replacing it with a healthy, offline habit.
At the end of Digital Citizenship Week, we will reward the Common Study with the greatest overall reduction in personal screen time and increase in healthy offline habits.
|
To help with this challenge, we wanted to provide some resources from Common Sense Media related to digital wellness:

We are excited to introduce SchooLinks, our new college and career readiness platform for students! SchooLinks is designed to help students stay organized and on track throughout the college application process. This year, seniors will use SchooLinks to request transcripts and letters of recommendation, as well as track application requirements and deadlines. Please note that SchooLinks is not an application portal—students will still submit applications through platforms such as Common App or directly through colleges.
For more information and step-by-step guidance, please review the resources below:
We look forward to supporting your student throughout this exciting process. Please reach out to your school counselor with any questions!

Apply for a Summer Residential Governor's School Program! What is that??
Summer Residential Governor’s Schools provide high school juniors and seniors with intensive educational experiences in visual and performing arts; humanities; medicine and health sciences; mathematics, science, and technology; or through mentorships in marine science, or engineering. Each Summer Residential Governor’s School focuses on one special area of interest. Students live on a college or university campus for up to four weeks in the summer. During this time, students are involved in classroom and laboratory work, field studies, research, individual and group projects and performances, and seminars with noted scholars, visiting artists, and other professionals. In the three mentorships, students are selected to work side-by-side with research scientists, physicians, and a variety of other professionals. For more information see ParentSquare messaging and or contact Mr. Clough in counseling!
