Attendance Matters

DID YOU KNOW?

  • By 9th grade, attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
  • Missing 10% (2 days a month) over the course of the school year can affect a student’s academic success.
  • A student may not miss more than 10 days for illness without the requirement of a doctor's note to excuse their absence.
  • Final exam days are not reschedulable.   These are regular school days and attendance is expected.  (June 1-4, 2027)

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Make school attendance a priority
  • Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day.
  • Help your children maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s rest.
  • If your child(ren) must stay home because they are sick, make sure they have contacted teachers for resources and materials to make up for the missed instructional time.

Help your teen stay engaged
  • Make sure your children are not missing class because of challenges with behavioral issues.
  • Monitor your child’s academic progress and seek help from teachers when necessary.
  • Stay on top of your child’s social contacts. Peer pressure can lead to skipping school, while students without many friends can feel isolated.
  • Encourage your child to join meaningful extra-curricular activities, including sports and clubs.

Communicate with the school
  • Know the school’s attendance policy
  • Check on your child’s attendance to be sure absences are not adding up.
  • Seek help from school staff if you need support.

Create/Verify a College Board Account*

ALL 9TH, 10TH, & 11TH GRADE STUDENTS
Regardless of whether or not a student is taking the PSAT on October 14th, all 9th, 10th, & 11th grade students need to create a College Board Account (or verify they can access their account if they have previously created one) by end of day Sunday, October 4th.
Please read this Create/Verify a College Board Account  document for how to do this and why everyone should do it. This document also contains directions for downloading the Bluebook app as well.

*Please note that the initial creation/verification of College Board accounts needs to take place off HCPS property because the initial process requires access to cell phones and/or personal email accounts which are not accessible at school.

SchoolLinks

We are excited to introduce SchooLinks, our new college and career readiness platform for students!  SchooLinks is designed to help students stay organized and on track throughout the college application process. This year, seniors will use SchooLinks to request transcripts and letters of recommendation, as well as track application requirements and deadlines. Please note that SchooLinks is not an application portal—students will still submit applications through platforms such as Common App or directly through colleges.

School counselors will begin meeting individually with all seniors starting the week of September 8 to support them through this process.

For more information and step-by-step guidance, please review the resources below:
 • SchooLinks Guide: https://bit.ly/SchooLinksGuide
 • SchooLinks Step-by-Step Presentation: https://bit.ly/SchooLinksPresentation
We look forward to supporting your student throughout this exciting process. Please reach out to your school counselor with any questions!

ASVAB Testing

The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is the military entrance exam. Sophomores are also invited to take the test as a practice test.  In addition to serving as the military entrance exam, it is also measures developed abilities and predicts future academic and occupational success. Taking the ASVAB can assist with exploring potential careers, even if one does not plan on entering the military. The date for our fall testing is Thursday, October 22nd). The test will begin at 9:15 and should conclude around 11:30 but may take up to three hours. Students should come to the library with a charged laptop after checking in to first period.  Students are responsible for any missed work. Students will miss 1st period and 3rd block since it is a Day 1. Please submit this google form below to sign up to test.
